These days, everyone wants a smile that looks great - and understandably so! But almost everyone will have damage such as cavities or chips at some point or another. Fortunately, Dr. Thompson can restore your smile with tooth-colored fillings that no one will see, not even you. At Tarpon Shores Dental, we know our patients want their smile to look just as great as it feels, and this type of restoration is just one of the ways we can do that. If you need dental fillings and want a solution that looks fantastic, give us a call!

What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings Made From?

Tooth-colored fillings are made of composite resin and silica. These materials respond much more like natural teeth in response to temperature and chewing pressure, which keeps your teeth healthier.

Whereas metal fillings expand and contract rapidly in response to temperature and can cause cracks in your teeth over time, tooth-colored fillings “flex” more like your own teeth do and prevent these cracks from forming.

Other Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings vs. Amalgam Fillings

If you get a cavity filled and don’t want it to be noticeable, tooth-colored fillings in Venice are the way to go. But this isn’t the only benefit!

These discreet restorations are significantly more durable than metal and also conserve more of your natural tooth structure. Metal fillings have to be larger because they’re kept in place through mechanical retention. But tooth-colored fillings form a long-lasting bond with the surrounding enamel, allowing them to be smaller so more of your existing tooth remains.

How Are Tooth-Colored Fillings Placed?

After making sure you’re completely comfortable and the area has been numbed, we’ll start by removing the decayed portion of your tooth. Then we’ll clean and dry the tooth before placing composite material into it.

Next, we’ll shape your new filling to make sure it looks natural and feels great. Once we’re satisfied that everything is just right, we’ll use a special light to “cure” or set the filling. When you leave, you’ll be able to eat and drink normally right away.

Caring For Your Tooth-Colored Fillings

Caring for your new restorations is much like caring for the rest of your smile. It starts with good oral hygiene habits, so be sure to brush at least twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste and floss once. It’s also important to schedule regular checkups with a dentist in Venice to make sure that all of your dental work is functioning well and doesn’t need any maintenance.

Tooth-colored fillings last many years, but all dental work is still subject to wear and tear. The best way to maximize the life of your fillings is to schedule regular visits and practice a few good habits at home!
