What is a Dental Implant?

With all of this talk about implants, what are they really?

A dental implant is actually a prosthetic tooth root that is made of a small titanium rod that is placed directly into the jawbone. Once there, it will fuse with the surrounding bone just like a natural tooth root. Then, it can be attached to a number of dental restorations to replace any number of missing teeth.

Unlike many other dental practices, Tarpon Shores Dental is able to handle the entire dental implant procedure from start to finish without the need for inconvenient referrals. Rather than sending you to a specialist, we’ll bring the specialist to you!

Dental implants are truly in a class of their own when it comes to rebuilding the smile. With them, we can:

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Qualified candidates for dental implants need to have three basic things: good dental health, stable overall health, and a strong, healthy jawbone. Pre-existing issues like cavities and gum disease or uncontrolled illnesses like diabetes can compromise the implant placement procedure, making it unsafe or unreliable for a patient. And, the posts also need to be placed in an adequate amount of jawbone that provides the proper support. Fortunately, Dr. Thompson can help patients address two of these issues at Tarpon Shores Dental. For general health issues, they will recommend a patient visit their family doctor.

Making Dental Implants Affordable

Dental implants are often the most cost-effective tooth replacement available because they can easily last for 30 years or more with the proper maintenance. However, they do tend to cost more up front than other options. It’s also important to note that there is no set price for implants as the number of implants, the need for any preparatory procedures, and insurance coverage can make the cost vary widely from person to person.

At Tarpon Shores Dental, we always work with our patients to help them find an implant plan that fits easily into their budget. To help offset the cost, we also offer low-to-no interest financing with CareCredit.

Single-Tooth Dental Implants

We’ll use what is called an implant-retained crown to replace a single missing tooth. For this, we’ll attach a custom-made, all-porcelain crown directly to an implant post using a metal connector called an abutment. Once this is done, the final product will be extremely lifelike and blend completely into a patient’s smile. The porcelain will be specially color-matched, and because the implant will have the same root-crown structure as the other teeth, only a patient will know which tooth isn’t real.

Dental Implant Bridges

For patients who are missing a few teeth in a row, we can also use implant crowns to support a bridge. For this, two implant crowns will be placed on either side of the gap in a patient’s smile, and these will be bonded to multiple prosthetic teeth to close it. With it, we can restore the appearance of a patient’s smile, help them regain their full bite, and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of place.

Dental Implant Dentures

Do you have a denture that fits terribly and can’t be trusted to stay in place? If so, dental implants can provide the solution you’ve been looking for. With an implant-retained denture, the prosthetic teeth are fixed to the jawbone just like natural teeth using multiple implants placed within the mouth. Implant-retained dentures have a much more secure hold than a typical removable prosthetic, that hold can be trusted to last for years to come, and they also enable a patient to regain much more of their natural bite strength!

All-on-4 implant denture model

With this procedure, we can restore four to eight missing teeth with a rock-solid implant denture in just a single appointment. It works by placing just four strategically located implants in the mouth so they are able to provide maximum support for the new teeth. Thanks to this treatment, a patient can literally wake up that morning with missing teeth and go to bed that night with a complete smile. All-on-4 is also a viable option for patients with thin or brittle jawbones who have been deemed bad candidates for dental implants in the past.
